Often when I think about what to do for entertainment with my children, my mind drifts to outfits and adventures that charge money, such as museums and movie theaters. It is so easy to overlook free activities, and these can be equally fun.
We are fortunate to live by a beach: Crown Beach in Alameda, California. Even better is the fact that our beach is part of a bay, so I don’t have to worry about rip currents. The sandy shore is super shallow with gentle ankle-high waves, and a tepid temperature. The only downside is that the bay water can be nasty, so we’re always sure to hose the children off as soon as we get home. As a parent, it is so nice to sit in the warm sand, gazing out at the children playing in the water. The kids have a great time, and I get the opportunity to slow my pace, breathe, and melt into the atmosphere.
I have never been to a beach that does not have an awesome vibe. It is fun to people-watch and to lean into the music they play and sniff the barbecued food they cook up on the waterfront. If I could have a button for relaxation, that would be my button.
I realize how lucky we are to live near a beach, and this has consistently proven to be one of the best activities.
It’s free, it’s fun, and it wipes the children out every single time.
