One of the many things we look forward to as a family every summer is returning to my hometown near Chicago. Between visiting relatives and exploring the Land of Lincoln, there is always fun to be had! During our most recent visit, I finally brought my kids to the place that holds some of my favorite childhood memories: the Shedd Aquarium.
We started at the spectacular Caribbean Reef, which holds some of the most extraordinary sea creatures. My daughter was able to spot Nickel, one of the rescued sea turtles that has been a part of the Caribbean Reef exhibit since I was a little girl. As I told my children the story of Nickel surviving a boat wreck many years ago, they showed great empathy for him. My oldest son Shane said it best, “Humans should be more careful so they don’t hurt the animals.” Seeing my little ones in awe of the wondrous sea creatures that I used to marvel over was heartwarming.
Another highlight of our visit was the aquatic show at the Oceanarium Amphitheater. “Mommy, look at the dolphin!” my daughter squeals. Nothing will amuse your children more than watching the talented dolphins and whales perform amazing tricks. I highly recommend going in early to get a good seat!
Aside from the impressive exhibits, the food at the Shedd Aquarium is terrific. There is an outdoor terrace where you can sit and have a bite to eat. Best of all, the Shedd Aquarium is situated right in front of Lake Michigan and has one of the most phenomenal lakeside views in Chicago.
As a Chicago native, I can truly say that the Shedd Aquarium is one of the greatest treasures the city has to offer. You may not be able to see everything in one visit but some exhibits to put on your list are the Caribbean Reef, Amazon Rising, and Polar Play Zone. If you are looking for some kid friendly fun in the Windy City, the Shedd Aquarium is a must! I gave it a five star rating on our Kid Friendly Venues app where all the best venues for children are listed with personal recommendations by other moms.
