Our 4th of July activities typically include a cook out, backyard swimming, and finishing the evening out with a local fireworks show. But what about specifics? Let’s dig in!
July 4th foods can be one of the most fun parts of the festivities! My family always loves the old favorites—grilled hamburgers and hotdogs with all the typical sides (though I admit, their side of choice is usually potato chips!)
Here are a few simple ideas that can add to your fun—two are sweet treats, and one is a savory dish for those without a sweet tooth!
Nothing says “Happy Birthday America” more than red, white, and blue treats. Here are a few ideas to get you started:
Bake your favorite white cake mix in a rectangular pan. Once cooled, frost with your favorite white frosting. Arrange the blueberries in the top left corner to represent stars and use sliced strawberries to create the stripes. It’s simple, patriotic, delicious, and kid-approved!
Thread the strawberries, blueberries, and banana slices onto the skewers to create a fun and healthy snack that everyone will love.
Here’s a fun fact—these are a fan-favorite of my 7-year-old son!
Arrange cherry tomatoes and mozzarella balls in rows on a platter. Use cooked purple potatoes to add a touch of blue in the upper lefthand corner and drizzle with balsamic glaze for a festive and refreshing appetizer.
This choice is great for those who aren’t looking for a sweet treat, and it’s great for kids and adults.
Crafts and games are a great way to engage kids and even teens. The crafts give the kids something tangible by which to remember their fun day. The games help create lasting memories!
Paint the tin cans with red, white, and blue stripes. Once dry, glue ribbons around the bottom edge of the can to create a windsock effect. Attach a string to hang them up and watch them flutter in the breeze.
Paint the toilet paper rolls in patriotic colors and decorate them with glitter and star stickers. These can be used as decorations or even as makeshift binoculars for the fireworks show.
Set up a corn hole game in your backyard for some friendly competition. You can even paint the boards in patriotic colors for extra flair.
Organize a volleyball or pickleball match to get everyone moving and having fun. These games are great for all ages and can be enjoyed by the whole family.
Teenagers love to socialize, so it’s important to plan activities that allow them to hang out with their friends while still celebrating the holiday. Here are a few great activities for the teens in your life!
If you have access to a pool or live near a beach or lake, organize a swim party for your teens and their friends. It’s a great way to cool off and have fun in the sun, and you can even incorporate it into your other July 4th festivities.
Gather a group of teens and head to a nearby park or beach to enjoy a fireworks display in your area. Don’t forget some blankets and snacks for a cozy evening under the stars!
In the North Alabama area, we have tons of fireworks events to choose from. Some are free, like the Independence Day at MidCity District event in Huntsville, Alabama. Others, like the Trash Panda Independence Day Firework Spectacular in Madison, Alabama, have a small cost.
The KFV app can help you find local events for you and your teens!
We hope this guide has inspired you to create a fun and memorable 4th of July for your family. With these easy snack ideas, games, and activities, you’ll be able to celebrate America’s birthday in style without the stress!
