I know my strengths, and teaching is not one of them. However, little did I know that the moment I became a mother…boom, teaching became a daily requirement too. I am doing a pretty good job at it and I am sure you are too.
But if you need an activity to assist with the education of your little one, stop by the Children’s Literature Gallery at the American Writer Museum in downtown Chicago. Reading books, especially in this magical space, is just so wonderful to teach your child about all the wonders of the world.
It is a small space, but don’t be fooled. There is a ton of literary adventures to experience there. My son ran straight to the mural created by Paul O. Zelinsky as soon as we entered. I am sure every child has this same reaction because this mural is mesmerizing. It depicts a tree with over forty squirrels hanging on the branches reading books. Each squirrel is reading a different book with a special accessory around them that hints at the book they are reading. This mural is untitled, but my son calls it “wow, mom!” and that statement sure is fitting.
There is also an interactive gallery displaying more art from notable children’s books. Filled with fiction and non-fiction children’s books, select one or two and find a cozy spot on a couch to have ‘Mommy-and-me Storytime’. On our visit, we read our favorite Dr. Suess books and stayed for several hours. I know that you can easily do story time at home but reading at the Children’s Literary Gallery is better! I gave it a five stars recommendation on our new KidFriendlyVenues app. Your child is guaranteed to learn something and have a good time.
I recommend the Children’s Literary Gallery for any age. It is vital that we encourage our children to appreciate libraries and art. With interest comes involvement and so make sure you check our KFV app for more information on other educational venues in your area, hobby shops and outdoor parks that compliment the open mind full of curiosity that every child has once a world’s wonder has been discovered.
