Upon Visiting Lahontan Reservoir, which is also State Park, we found out that Nevada has a State Park Passport! It has all of the state parks listed in it, and you get a stamp as you go through the parks. With the passport also comes a map of the state with the parks. I was surprised to see how many parks there are!
Now that we have the passport, we plan to go visit a few more of the state parks with historical significance. Even our three- year- old was interested in matching the book pages with the map. I think that it was our first time looking at a map together and it was easy to show her where the lakes and the mountains were etc. As she gets older it will maybe make road trips a little more exciting if she can stamp her way across our state.
Lahontan Reservoir itself can sometimes have a reduced water level due to heavy drought conditions but the view and the landscape make it a fabulous kid friendly venue. We are on a camping kick, and went to the location out of convenience and cost. It is forty minutes away and we have an annual pass through the Disable Veterans program but the entrance fee is a very acceptable $5.00 and you have the freedom to choose a variety of amenities including birdwatching, boating, canoeing, fishing, hiking and picnics. Pets are ok too.
We showed our kids how to fish. Deliberately, we did not catch anything but we really enjoyed trying. We let them play with poles that had no hooks. There are a wide variety of kid's poles and adult fishing rods at all Cabela's sporting goods stores nationwide that makes it easy to get everyone fishing-ready for a family adventure. These premier stores for hunting, fishing, camping and shooting gear are listed on the KidFriendlyVenues app found on this website.
Pro Tip: Make sure that you look up the fishing license requirements in your state long before you get to the beach. Some of the licenses must be purchased in person at specific locations. I mentioned our Disabled Veterans State Park Pass... if you have a veteran in your family, it is always a good idea to visit your local VA to find out what fun perks you can get. Our vets also get a free fishing license!
