Upper Michigan offers so much to see and do for families of all ages in the summer. From its beautiful views of both Lake Superior and Lake Michigan to its hundreds of miles of hiking trails, it is a dream spot for families who love the outdoors and history.
One of my absolute favorite family spots is Fayette Historic State Park. Located just a few miles off of US 2 this spot not only offers a glimpse into the history of the area but also five miles of stunning hiking trails and beautiful views of Lake Michigan’s Big Bay de Noc.
The small town of Fayette has been meticulously restored to its original glory. It was one of the largest iron smelting towns between 1867 and 1891. Today, you can still see the large furnaces, charcoal kilns, warehouses, hotel, offices, and residences. It gives an amazing glimpse into what life was like in Fayette and the Upper Peninsula at the time.
Continuing through the village visitors will come across various hiking paths. All paths are easy to get through and fun for all age groups. They offer beautiful views of the forest as well as views of the enormous white limestone cliffs and Big Bay de Noc on Lake Michigan.
I can say that this is one of our favorite spots to visit each summer as we tour the Upper Peninsula. My daughters are 12 and 15 years of age and have been going since they were little. To this day, they still love it. Fayette State Park is definitely a Kid Friendly Venue and makes for a great outdoor family day.
