Summer is here, and if you’re a working mom like me, you’re probably juggling a thousand things at once. Finding the time and budget for a traditional vacation might seem like a Herculean task, but who says you need to travel miles away to make unforgettable memories? While I’ve got big plans for next spring and summer, this summer my family will be opting for a staycation. It’s the perfect solution to keep the kids happy, entertained, and busy—all from the comfort of our home and our local surroundings.
One of my all-time favorite staycation ideas has to be backyard camping. It’s simple, fun, and it feels like an adventure, especially for the little ones. My husband has done this with our kids in the past, and they loved it. However, our 6-year-old son has yet to sleep in a tent. He is looking forward to “roughing it” this summer.
Imagine the excitement in your kids’ eyes as they help pitch a tent (which, by the way, you can find at great prices at stores like Academy Sports or Dick’s Sporting Goods, but you can check local discount stores, too)! Throw in some cozy sleeping bags, a couple of flashlights, and you’re set for a night under the stars. Don’t forget to share stories, maybe even spook each other a little, and indulge in some classic s’mores. We always pack a bag of snacks to avoid unnecessary trips inside the house, but if anyone needs a bathroom break, home is just a few steps away (no outhouse required)!
Of course, if you’d like to go a little farther from home you can always search out local campsites at nearby state parks or lakes. These make for low-key, low-budget vacation spots. You can also save money by borrowing gear from friends and family.
Nothing screams summer more than splashing around in water. Dedicate a day to visiting your local public pool or, if you’re lucky to live near one, a water park. It’s a fantastic way to cool off and provides endless entertainment for the kids. Pack some snacks, sunscreen, and your favorite pool floats. It’s a simple yet effective way to create those summer vibes without breaking the bank. Plus, watching your children’s laughter and joy as they play in the water? Priceless.
We happen to have a swimming pool in our backyard, but visiting other swimming spots is a highlight for my kids. Doing something different and special seems to stick out in their minds. In years past, we have visited the pools of friends and family, our local public pool, and a nearby water park called Point Mallard. They’ve loved all these choices, and these are definitely things we’ll plan to do during our upcoming staycation.
We often overlook the treasures hiding in plain sight within our own communities. Take a day or two to explore your own local attractions. We plan to take a trip to the Nashville Zoo, which is a 90-minute drive from our house. A trip to the zoo can be both educational and fun for the kids. Many zoos offer interactive experiences that can keep the family engaged for hours. Alternatively, a day at the park—armed with a picnic basket, a frisbee, and perhaps a kite—can provide that perfect blend of relaxation and activity. The goal here is to see your everyday surroundings through a new lens, discovering and appreciating what’s been there all along.
One of the best ways to find local spots is to download the free Kid Friendly Venue app. This great time management tool can help you quickly narrow down the best places to visit with kids in your area!
The beauty of a staycation is that it doesn’t have to cost much to be memorable. For supplies, hit up discount stores where you can find everything from picnic essentials to camping gear at a fraction of the price. Don’t forget to tap into your network of mom friends for a local meetup. It’s a fantastic way to socialize (for both you and your kids) and perhaps even share the responsibility of supervision, giving you a bit of a breather. Cookouts are another excellent way to bring people together without spending a fortune. Have everyone bring a dish or a snack, and you’ve got a party that’s light on the wallet but rich in fun.
Summer doesn’t have to mean extravagant vacations to far-flung destinations. With a bit of creativity and planning, a staycation can provide just as much, if not more, enjoyment and relaxation for your family. Use these ideas and tips as a starting point, and don’t be afraid to tailor them to fit your family’s interests and needs. And most importantly, have fun! After all, these are the days your kids will remember fondly, and so will you. Happy Staycationing!
